Project Name: Koca Naip Mosque Restoration

Location: Osmangazi, Bursa

Year of Implementation: 2017-2019

Project Description:

Having an important place among the historical mosques of Bursa, Koca Naip Mosque is an Ottoman work known to have been built by Koca Naip Mahmut in the 15th century. This building, which attracts attention with its single domed harim, Turkish triangular pulley transitions, brick-bodied minaret with a single balcony and armudi cone, is considered to be the first example of the shield-walled mosques in Bursa.

Among the architectural features of the mosque:

  • Tile belt under the balcony of the minaret
  • Tiles at the entrance with shield walls, only two of which have survived to the present day
  • It has unique dome transition systems and traditional Ottoman mosque architecture.

Although the mosque maintained its structural integrity to a great extent during the historical process, it has been subjected to various interventions and additions over time. With the restoration works carried out between 2017-2019, the original architectural texture of the mosque was preserved and the following improvements were made:

  • Removal of the additions and restoration of the structure to its original form
  • Structural strengthening of the minaret and preservation of original details
  • Repairing the damages on the dome and walls in the harim section**
  • Facade cleaning and repair of original stonework
  • Conservation of the tile belt and identification and conservation of missing pieces
  • Meticulous restoration of original elements such as wood, lead cladding and interior decorations

Koca Naip Mosque was reopened for worship after the completion of its restoration in 2019.
