Bursa-Mudanya Ömerbey Mosque Restoration Work
Built by Ömer Bey in Bursa Mudanya in the 18th century, the mosque is a work of the 3rd Ahmed period. Damaged in the 1855 earthquake, the building was restored in accordance with the original. The mosque, which preserves its authenticity with its historical minaret, reflects the Ottoman heritage.

Project Description:
Ömer Bey Mosque, located in Mudanya and one of the important examples of 18th century Ottoman architecture, was built by Ömer Bey in 1715 during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Ahmed III. It has been subjected to various interventions over the centuries and has lost its originality to a great extent. However, the minaret has preserved its original form to a great extent from the period it was built to the present day.
The Effects of the 1855 Bursa Earthquake and the Restoration Decision:
Analyses conducted during the restoration works revealed that the mosque was severely damaged in the Bursa earthquake of 1855 and its static integrity was disrupted. It was determined that this situation caused significant weakening in the structural system of the building. In line with the decision taken by the Bursa Regional Board for the Protection of Cultural Assets, it was decided to restore the mosque in accordance with the original and to carry out structural strengthening works.
Restoration Works Realized:
- Preparation of the building survey, restitution and restoration projects
- Soil and foundation reinforcement works
- Static improvement of load-bearing walls and arch systems
- Elimination of earthquake damages and preservation of the original architectural details of the mosque
- Conservation of the minaret and completion of missing parts
- Facade cleaning, stone and plaster repairs
- Renovation of wooden door and window joinery in accordance with original materials and techniques
- Preservation and strengthening of interior ornamentation and calligraphy
Conclusion:
Thanks to this restoration work, Ömer Bey Mosque was reopened for worship in 2019 by preserving its original architectural texture and structurally strengthened. The project has been an important achievement in terms of preserving and protecting the historical heritage of Bursa.
