Bilecik-Bozuyuk Kumral Abdal Tomb and Masjid 2018-2019 Restoration Work

The tomb in Bozüyük, Bilecik was built by Osman Gazi in the 13th century. There are the sarcophagi of Kumral Abdal and Horasan Soldiers. It was restored in 1994 and opened to visitors in 2019.

Project Description:

Located in Bozüyük district of Bilecik, Kumral Abdal Tomb is an important historical structure known to have been built by Osman Gazi in the 13th century. In the mausoleum, there are chests belonging to Kumral Abdal, one of the mujahideen and raider dervishes who lived in the foundation years of the Ottoman Empire, and the Khorasan eren.

Kumral Abdal, known as the disciple of Sheikh Edebali and the standard bearer of Ertuğrul Gazi, is one of the spiritual founding figures of the Ottoman Empire and is rumored to be one of the dervishes who foretold that Osman Gazi would become sultan.

In 1994, the mausoleum was rebuilt by the district district governorship with cut stone hexagonal body walls and a reinforced concrete dome, and it has survived together with an additional masjid built on the same date. With the restoration work carried out in 2018-2019, the architectural texture of the tomb and masjid was preserved and the following improvements were realized:

  • Detailed technical analysis and damage assessment of the shrine and masjid
  • Carrier system repairs and structural strengthening works
  • Exterior facade cleaning and preservation of the original stone texture
  • Dome, wall and interior repairs
  • Reorganization of landscaping and cemetery area
  • New landscaping and access arrangements suitable for visitor use

This project has ensured that the Kumral Abdal Tomb, which has great historical and spiritual value, is protected and passed on to future generations in a healthy way. After the restoration works were completed, the mausoleum and masjid were reopened to visitors in 2019.
